There are so many families now that are in need of help to care for their animals.
In Spain, life is the toughest it has been in many years, families are losing their homes and the first thing to go in times of crisis are always the animals. If you cant feed yourself you certainly cant feed your animals. There is no help in Spain, no government help, no social security, job seekers, tax credits or even child benefit. If you dont work you dont earn. its as simple as that. The problem now is that there is 22% unemployment, and no work out there. People are queing at the job centres and tempory work agencies from 7 am just to be the first to sent for the possibility of an interview.
We have been on contact with some people desperate for some help, people that until recently had managed perfectly well and enjoyed their animals giving the animals a fantastic lifestyle and caring for them perfectly well. Now they have no work, cant pay their mortgages and rent, and are more often than not relying on only one wage. Many are losing their homes and are living in rented or loaned accommodation or even returning to live with elderly parents.
One particular family we are working with now have always rescued animals and helped out so many people and animals over the years. Last year they lost their husband, mother, son, grandson and finally permissions to run their restaurant business. now they rely on the elderly woman to work part time as a cleaner, and the remaining son to care for the animals they have as best he can on the very small wage that comes in from the mother. This son has mental health problems and has always relied on his mother and father, brothers and sisters. Now he has to be the one to be responsible and he doesnt know how! So we step in.
We are helping with feed for the animals, with vetenary care, spaying, neutering, leishmania collars (a deadly virus similar to malaria that is transmitted by mosquitos and attacks the skin and internal organs of dogs) operating on the stallions, installing automatic water systems, treating mange, and so much more.
I am posing photos of some of the animals that are currently in desperate need of help.
If anyone feels they can help, in any way, perhaps by some fund raising, maybe a bbq or band night, or sponsered walk, etc Please get in touch.
We also hope to organise a large party of volunteers to come for the month of October to rebuild some of the walls and stables that were recently destroyed by a tornado. We work with www.helpx.net which is an amazing web site allowing people to travel the world and help out at various farms, hostels, rescue centres etc for free in return for accommodation and food. If anyone would like to get involved please contact either Sarah or Jane through this blogsite or through the e mail address.
We are just two people trying to make a difference. We hope more want to join in and help us.
Thanks for reading. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you feel you can help or want more information.
